Lillian Rubin is a ceramic artist based in Burlington, Iowa. She specializes in a type of pottery called "Raku Pottery." This technique is performed in an outdoor kiln. As Rubin explains, "After glazing, the pieces are fired to 1,830 degrees. Then the kiln is opened while hot and the pieces are removed with tongs and placed in a large metal container filled with pine needles. The top is quickly replaced, and as the oxygen is consumed, the reduced atmosphere pulls the base metals out of the glaze, and produces iridescent colors." Stop in today and check out her Raku fired vases, ranging in price from $60-$100 each. BCA members receive a 10% discount.
