The November/December BCA Featured Artist in the James Keefe Gallery is Susan Czechowski.
Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Czechowski moved to the Midwest in 2001. From an early age she found a unique energy from walking around New York City with her camera. Czechowski discovered Coney Island sometime in the late 80s and became fascinated with the intersection of bright lights, people and the carnival atmosphere. Early on she was drawn in by the liveliness of the carnival, but she has come to appreciate the many layers of the human experience - sometimes even celebrating the beauty in the seemingly grotesque.
Throughout Czechowski's career, she has returned time and time again to these subjects, and she continues to be fascinated with "Americana." She is still seeking out events and stories to capture with her photography, but her focus has turned to screen printing as a way to further develop an impression of these images.
Czechowski has always enjoyed the process and physicality of screen printing, but increasingly she finds herself dedicated to the medium for the way it allows her to become more intimate with an image. Czechowski uses silk screen as way to truly interact with the image's color and shape. Her hope is that the process she has found most gratifying, her love for the craft, is coming through in the final representations she shares.
Stop by the gallery today and check out these large prints, on display through December 30.
