Art from the HeARTland

Updated: Aug 23

Congratulations to the 2024 award winners! See below for list and juror comments.

Honorable Mention:

Katrina Morrison, Her Flowers, monoprint

I was attracted to the complex color combination in this multi-layered monoprint that looked like it was a lot of fun to make.

Honorable Mention:

Julie Nelson, Hair Allium and Coral Bell, watercolor/ink

I enjoyed the delicate and lyrical abstracted viewpoint of a garden, as the artist chose to focus on certain elements while omitting others.

Honorable Mention:

Joshua Hinkle, Jump the Broom, found objects

The artist expertly combined the disparaged elements of dried flowers with wood and wood with bone.

Honorable Mention:

Deb Lutz, Sundance, digital fractal design

The piece captures inner light, swirling movement and fabulous color well.

Photography Award:

John Potter, Northern Lights Angel, photography

One of the wonderful aspects of photography is the moment when the artist captures an elusive event. There are several entries in this exhibit that captured the recent Northern Light phenomenon, and I thought this one was the most unique.

Ceramics Award:

Susan Lawhorn, Carbon Capture, porcelain

Mysterious human form fused with plant forms in a totem format attracted me as well as the surprising green and pink color combination. I like to be surprised.

Painting Award:

John Nelson, Point of Departure, acrylic on linen

This Color Field/Op Art painting stood out from everything else on the walls with the illusion of a shallow, vibrating space.

Mixed Media Award:

Cherry Simmons, Cherry Print, mixed media

I felt like I was within this tree or bush as I viewed this playful artwork which creates a dense, atmospheric perspective by expertly integrating the found branches with the painted ones.

Sculpture Award:

Jeanne Clark, Nature Goddess, felted fiber

This was a surprising use of the felted medium to create a stable, soft sculpture with luscious textures and colors. I liked that the base (and supporting inner rod) was integrated so well with the design.

Works on Paper:

David Guiterrez, Homage (Rothko), ink/monoprint

I was drawn to the simple format and complex color combinations on the top half of the piece along with the frenetic mark making.

Best of Show:

Janis Mars Wunderlich, Voices of Nature, ceramic

This sculpture dominates by encapsulating a multi-dimensional world view, complex ideas that appeal on many levels and an unmatched complexity of form and color in ceramic making. Wunderlich never fails to impress with her skill in this medium.
