Primarily Pinhole

Primarily Pinhole
Handmade Photography in the Digital Age
Closing Reception 5-7pm Friday, March 1
We kick-off our 30th anniversary of the arts with our 2019 exhibition season featuring the photography of Spiffy Tumbleweed January 15 - March 1, in the BCA gallery. OFTA gallery talk is 10am Wednesday, January 16. This exhibit spotlights the process of merging historic pinhole photography with new digital technology. Working under the name Spiffy Tumbleweed, the artist lives and works in South Austin, Texas, and is active with a variety of photographic processes. He had a primary interest in pinhole photography for many years and worked with a variety of different formats and materials. Tumbleweed spends most Sunday afternoons in an old school wet darkroom, and while he enjoys experimenting with a variety of alternative photographic processes, and works in both digital and film, he has a decided preference for black and white film.

Tumbleweed enjoys pinhole photography because he likes to take the gear out of the equation. The image that he makes with pinhole photography is a creation of his eye, his mind, and his understanding of the light and the materials he is using, not his equipment. He likes the surreal look that he can sometimes achieve with pinhole and his most satisfying recent work results more in representation than reality.

He designs and builds his own cameras because he can, and because it brings him great satisfaction to create an image from a device he's also created. Pinhole photography forces him to be deliberate, and to be very much in the moment when he visualizes and then exposes an image. He uses film, paper, and Polaroid, and the material he is shooting strongly influences what and how he shoots, and vice-versa.

Harlow Blum Retrospective

Harlow Blum has responded to the beauty of nature throughout his career as an artist. This response is incorporated into many continuing and wide-ranging themes in his works which are on display at the Buchanan Center for the Arts October 30, 2018 - January 4, 2019.

Join us for an opening reception 5-7pm Friday, November 2, as we celebrate over 60 years of creativity. Blum will also join us for Old Friends Talk Art 10am Wednesday, November 14.

Blum is also the FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH for November.

Blum has responded to the beauty of Nature throughout my career as an artist. This response has been incorporated into many continuing and wide-ranging themes in his work which include the effects of global warming, the cycles of nature in volcano eruptions and lava flows, the majestic forms of mountains and canyons, and the serene calm of Japanese landscapes and gardens. His travel to Asia and my research of Asian art and culture have had a profound impact on his work over a period of many years. Blum uses a wide variety of textural materials in my acrylic collage paintings, including sand, resins, bird gravel, papers, particularly Japanese handmade papers, Japanese cedar boards, and rusted metals. Another important material is expandable foam which is used in many of the “Fire and Ice” works.

Ideas for a new work are often sparked by “found” items or materials that have the potential of being transformed into an art form, sometimes as the subject or as one of the elements which contributes to the whole. Blum's “Rust” works series is an example of giving new life to otherwise discarded materials. After several decades, he continues the search for new materials while he revisits old themes and discover new ones. Blum’s artwork is on display at the BCA through January 4, 2019, and is available purchase. http://www.harlowblumart.com/_/
